What the map shows. These maps estimate where and when people in Catalonia are more likely to encounter tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus). For each area and month, the model estimates the probability that at least one valid report of a tiger mosquito would be sent through Mosquito Alert from that area during that month, assuming the same sampling effort everywhere.

That assumption matters. Without it, the map would mostly show where people use the app. The model uses Mosquito Alert’s measure of sampling effort, together with weather, land cover and other environmental and social variables, and then holds sampling effort constant across Catalonia.

These are not estimates of your personal chance of being bitten. What the model estimates is the chance of a report, which should be roughly related to how likely people are to encounter tiger mosquitoes in that place and month.

Estimates are computed at points about 400 m apart and averaged over each hexagon (about 5 km²) or municipality shown on the map.

Model confidence. The model is more certain in some places than others, mainly where there is more data. The areas are divided into three equal groups, from most to least certain, labelled high, medium and low. These labels are relative to the rest of Catalonia, not an absolute measure of accuracy.
